ACQUIRE CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENDENT
You are entitled to claim Italian citizenship if:

FATHER

Your father was born in Italy and was an Italian citizen when you were born, and you never renounced your Italian citizenship.

PATERNAL GRANDFATHER

Your paternal grandfather or your maternal grandfather was born in Italy and was an Italian citizen when his son was born. Neither you nor anyone in the line ever renounced the Italian citizenship. If your grandmother was born before January 1, 1948, she is entitled to claim her Italian citizenship only from her father and can transmit it only to children born after that date. 

MOTHER

Your mother was born in Italy and was an Italian citizen when you were born, you were born after January 1, 1948 and you never renounced your Italian citizenship.
Before January 1, 1948, when the Italian Constitution came into force, Italian women could not transmit citizenship to their children.

PATERNAL GRANDFATHER

Your paternal grandfather was born in Italy and was an Italian citizen when your father was born, and you and your father never renounced your Italian citizenship.

MATERNAL GRANDFATHER

Your maternal grandfather was born in Italy and was an Italian citizen when your mother was born, and you were born after January 1, 1948, and you and your mother never renounced your Italian citizenship. Before January 1, 1948, when the Italian Constitution came into force, Italian women could not transmit citizenship to their children.

THE LAW

Italian laws that regulate Jure Sanguinis citizenship do not have generational limits, so if your situation is not described above, you might still be eligible.

There are some rules and critical dates to take into consideration

that might affect your eligibility:

Rule 1

Your Italian ancestor was alive after the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy on 17 March 1861.

Rule 2

Your Italian ancestor was born in Italy but was a minor when their parents naturalized.

Rule 3

If your Italian ancestor never naturalized, you have to be able to prove it with a certificate of non-existence of naturalization records from USCIS and a certified census report showing their non-US citizenship status.

Rule 4

If your Italian ancestor immigrated to another country before immigrating to the U.S., you need to prove they never naturalized in that country.
